Psychological help for families of patients

Psychological help for families of patients with psychiatric disorders

Psychiatric disorders include a number of psychotic states amongst which are: acute psychotic reaction, schizophrenia, bipolar affective disorder and paranoid psychosis.

These disorders affect not only the patient but the whole family. Family members have to cope with their own fears, anger and sadness. Feelings are often intervowen but also at times replace each other.

Sometimes there is a dominant affective reaction. Various questions are asked: What has happened and why? Have we done something wrong? How should we behave and what should we do to help him/her?

’Psychological Circles’ can help you get to know the cause, prognosis and characteristics of a disorder that a member of your family might suffer from, the possibilities for treatment and information about the effects of medication and also the chages that might occur to the sick person.

We can offer to help you recognise and handle your own feelings in an easier way and give you instructions on how you can help the sick member of your family.

In this way we can help you get involved in a psychiatric treatment in the most adequate way because the family can have a great influence on the course of illness.

The help is actually directed at the whole family in how to re-establish the lost balance within the family – this is essential not only to the sick person but to all members of the family.
