First grade is neccessary in its entirety so that children can get used to school. There are numerous, huge demands and challenges. At first parents need to keep a careful eye on what is going on at school and work closely with the teacher; remind the child to do things they know themselves with the innitial guidance and encouragement that they can ask for help whenever they need it.
Part of the school activities is planed to be done at home with parents and children together.
Children are not all prepared to start school in the same way and they have different individual abilities so the learning process and development of good working habbits depend on this.
Most children need time to take on responsibilities, and some will find it really hard to do things they don’t want to do. That is why some children will need a constant reminder and guidance.
School should not be a threat; the child needs to play too but also needs to accept new responsibilities such as preparing the school bag, pencilcase, a ball, the clothes they will wear.
In contacts with the teacher it is neccessary to pay attention on how the child behaves at school and what is her/his impression of the child’s attention and behaviour. Do not allow school to be the only topic of conversation at home. The child has other interests, worries, firsl love, etc.
Sometimes parents get angry when they think the child does not pay enough attantion while studying. It is to be expected of the first grade child because the attention flactuates from what needs to be done to what the child would like to do.
Anger can enhance the resistence towards the school so parents are advised not to show it too openly. Praise, encouragement and support are very important to motivate the child, if the child is facing difficulties.
